The tippmann 98 is amazingly reliable. you could beat it, throw it into the lake, fetch it a day later and roll it down the grand canyon and it still might work. However, most of us dont want to do that and would prefer our guns in a good working condition. Here is a step by step on taking apart the 98:
Step 1) Unscrew your main body screws. This includes the ones at the back, above the trigger, the one in the foregrip, and the one by the front site and the button that unhinges the feedneck.
Step 2) Unscrew the ASA. This is the air source adapter and its where you screw the tank into. Take out the back piece.
Step 3) Life the left side (left side if your holding it like your shooting it) off to reveal the internals. If you have never taking apart a 98 make sure to look at where everything is.
Step 4) take the bolt and rear bolt out. Lube any o-rings. You can use a lube like Sleek or hater sauce, or an oil like tippmann oil or eclipse gun oil. Whipe down any slime or grime that is in there. The ball detent always likes to get dirty so dont forget to give that a wipe down.
Step 5) re-assemble any parts you have taking out. Make sure the button that unhinges the feedneck is correctly in place. Make sure the front and rear bolt are correctly connect with the connecting rod. Make sure your spring and spring guide fit right into the back piece. The left half of the body should slide back on fairly easy, dont force it. If you have to force it something is not in right.
Step 6) go shoot people
Tippmann A5
Weight: 3.4 lbs stock
Length: 24" with stock barrel
Threads: Tippmann
Gas: Air or CO2. High pressure only
Air efficiency: A little under 1000 shots from a 20 oz, same with a 68/45.
Speed: 15 bps stock, possibly more with an egrip but unrealistic.
Assembly/dissasembly
Step 1) Take out the four pushpins. Now unscrew your main body screws. This includes the ones at the back, above the trigger, the one in the foregrip, and the one that connects the cyclone feed to the body. Disconnect the hose that attaches the cyclone feed.
Step 2) Unscrew the ASA. This is the air source adapter and its where you screw the tank into. Remove the back piece.
Step 3) Life the left side (left side if your holding it like your shooting it) off to reveal the internals. If you have never taking apart an A5 make sure to look at where everything is.
Step 4) take the bolt and rear bolt out. Lube any o-rings. You can use a lube like Sleek or hater sauce, or an oil like tippmann oil or eclipse gun oil. Wipe down any slime or grime that is in there. The ball detent always likes to get dirty so dont forget to give that a wipe down.
Step 5) re-assemble any parts you have taking out. The left half of the body should slide back on fairly easy, dont force it. If you have to force it something is not in right. Make sure the cyclone feed is clean inside so it does not spread diseased debri around to your future gelatinous spheres.
