myself I wear normal running shoes, I've worn boots before for games and I noticed the only difference was my legs felt more tired at the end of the day
so I stick to the shoes, lighter and what not, plus I'm not really worried about anything being waterproof; I've a habit of getting in over my head with water anyways, lol
if you have trouble with weak ankles though I highly suggest boots, as they provide a lot more support
as for cleats, I'd prolly just stick to a nice hiking or running shoe with adequate traction over the cleats; but then I've never liked cleats for anything
thats my opinion hope it helps ya

I wear army issue combat boots, the jungle version with the synth sides. They're light, the treads are HUGE, and I put some massaging insoles in them, so they're ultra comfortable. They don't move around like other types of footwear, and they've got the best traction I've ever experienced. Plus they're only $30 at CC Surplus.

I wear boots, because I like the ankle support.

It really depends for me, sometimes I'll just wear tennis shoes, sometimes I'll wear my old cleats from football, and sometimes I'll throw on an old pair of hunting boots.
I'd say I probably go with the cleats about 60% of the time.

most of the time boots. there are times when the ground is really hard and hilly, I'll switch to metal cleats but, most of the time boots.
Northerncommandpaintball.com has the nice side zip boots.(easy on-off)

this is an issue that I have been thinking about for a long time. I used to do quite a bit of hiking and backpacking (hence my fear of bears) and what I found (IMHO) was the best for all those things hands down is high to mid football cleats with rubberized soles, the metal cleats work ok too but I found I got better traction climbing over downed trees and scaling muddy hill sides in rubberized cleats, hiking boots are too heavy and bulky and military style boots while a bit more hardened are overkill and dont provide the radical terrain grip that you need. the other shoes that I like and will probably be using for this upcoming season are turf football cleats, they have little rubber spikes all around the sole and work very well on most surfaces.... you can use them indoor as well.

Yup, like Sarge said,Underarmour cleats with rubber cleats. You have to have the rubber in the woods for downed trees, and slick mud.
Well I wear a 3/4 high boot, just above the ankle. They give good ankle support lessening chance of twisting. With a good waffle sole for traction. But if I were to choose a spike I'd go with the rubber type. Maybe a set of softball spikes 3/4 high. Steel spikes tend to slip on rocks, collect a lot of leaves and hurt if you should happen to step on someones foot.;) Good ? though, everybody knows that footwear in the woods does matter./AKA

Cleats are nice on airball fields, especially turf, but imho you don't need cleats in the woods. Cleats do give you very good traction in the dirt but even rubber cleats get slippery on hard (trees) or wet (wet trees, rocks) surfaces.
I wear good old Nike air max LTD running shoes and they have always worked great. There have been times where I have slipped but it was usually because I got myself into a bad situation and I had to run like a bat outa hell to get out of there and wasn't really paying attention. But I have never had any problems during normal play.
I don't see any problem with cleats in the woods as long as you use a shorter cleat (football, turf, soccer).
What scares me the most with cleats is when they stick in the durt!
What I mean is when your foot or leg moves and your shoes don't, good way to spreign an ankle or tear an ACL. I've seen it happen.

I used to wear tennis shoes at Splat Tag all of the time and thusly, spent a good portion of my time falling down. Then, at my second GBG I slipped on some wet grass in the giant open field while charging the enemy. I fell backwards and my mask went flying off my face(despite being secure). Within 3 seconds, one of Darrin's refs was laying on my head shielding me from a barrage of paint.
Now, I wear Nike Landshark Football cleats. At $40.00 they are easy on the wallet and I haven't fallen in over two years.

To answer the question. Detachable cleats! I have been playing football from mini pewee to division 2 college ball. I have been on every surface. From five inches of mud to the turf in the metrodome. I have tried all kinds of footwear on the field, indoor cleats, modled cleats, and detachables, and found them to be the best. By getting detachables you can customize your play. You can get 1/4 inch spikes you can use indoors, and wont catch on the ground and break your ankle, up to the metal tipped 3/4 inches which will grip in anything, including snow. As for the the ankle support, you can get high risers that protect your ankle and support it through any movment. Professional running backs can juke out anyone wearing these, i think that you can do anything with them on the paintball field. Molded cleats will also work but wont give you the versatility that detachables will. i find that molded cleats gum up with mud and grass and become as slick as wearing tennis shoes. The cleats that come out today are becoming lighter and more durable. This will give you a long lasting, very high performance product that will help you boost your game.
So that is what i think about the footwear situation.
