yeah I know, I'm starting already. but, nothing would make me prouder than playing alongside hundreds of my fellow MN paintballers. Also, as of today, it is official, I am a commanding general in the Axis forces.

I have wanted to get to this for the last couple years, and I think I will try to get there next year. I'll have to start planning it into my schedule NOW.

Ok, now I can't wait........

anyone looking to go their first year, this is a great unit to join. we start the day defending 2 objectives and then we go kick the allies *** all over the field. don't believe me ask Frycook or Air force they were both with me and it was their first year.

So there are lots of guys from Minnesota/Wisconsin that go down?

Is there usually a convoy or something..? I'd be down for a group cruise down there.

There's usually several group convoys of varying size leaving from our area.

Definetly look into the 716th. We're some of the craziest Germans out there (for example, we saw action over the whole field in '08, including fighting at all three beaches).

Oh, and we have our good sense of humor too. Morale is almost always high with the 716th.

nchittendon

Humor.......I'm in. Laughter cures all........well, except obesity, but I'm working on that! haha I've got a group of about 5 people that are all very loose and like to have fun and we have been itching to do this game for the last couple years, but our schedules have not allowed us to.........09 will be different.

Pretty good chance I'll be going down again. No gaurantees that I'll have any of my crew with though. I'll definitely be registering with Mustang again this year. As soon as fall rolls around I will start stashing money away again.

I'm down for 09'. I'm going to make sure this would be the year I GO! Can't wait to shoot some vids. . I might even do less play, and more of following our guys. Can't wait to capture it thru my lenses.Got to buy extra cam batteries to last the whole week of intense action in 09'. Congrats on being the general Mustang.

kyle925, you should give me a call. if I can determine what you need electricity wise for your battery chargers, I may be able to make some accomodations. also the Bunker has requested a courtesy copy of any footage you get while there, applies to any photog or videographer. sent you my number in a pm.

Would that also apply to "helmet cameras" of players?

I'll have to keep that in mind... may need to figure out a way to get the footage to them.

My goal is to have footage of every event I play at in '09.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to drop a line here. 2008 was my first year at D-Day. I had a bunch of friends that said they would go, and we were all set. One by one they crapped out on me. I found Mustang on here and ended up going with his group. It was a little intimidating heading to such a big event without anyone I knew, but I had a awesome time.

Mustang answered a million questions for me before I went and gave me TONS of great ideas about things to bring and how to pack in general. Anyone looking to go to D-Day, do not hesitate to give Mustang a shout. It is a warm group he travels with, and it didn't even take the trip down for me to realize I wasn't going to be playing without friends.

If you love paintball. GO TO THIS EVENT. Period. You will not regret it.

I'll see ya there in '09.

Hey Mustang, what can you tell me about RV parking? I have a school bus that is being retro-fitted for sleeping in and by the looks of it, I won't be allowed anywhere but the RV area........

Hey Mustang, 4 people, myself included, are thinking about coming down. Is there still room to sign up? I hope so.

I see the dates say June 8th - 14th. do you guys go down there for that entire period of time? granted the 8th - 12th are all mini scenarios and the like, I was just curious.

also, I see that Wednesday says : All players must register today

but Friday says : Registration opens early/ends late

is that on site registration only?? meaning if you registered online earlier you can just show up on Saturday to play?

If I play my cards right I'll be going with Baddmoon, Bizarre, Shaman this year!

Right now, I'm expecting 5 Sentinels (5 have expressed significant interest). Realistically, 3-4 will be able to show up. If I can get more than 5 people in our car pool (Sentinels and non-Sentinels), we'll have to expand to a second vehicle. My minivan died, so I had to move to a new vehicle - it's an upgrade overall but the passenger capacity isn't as high (and I'll never get stuck at the Frostbuster again :) )

Hey Mustang, 4 people, myself included, are thinking about coming down. Is there still room to sign up? I hope so.

Yes, there is still room. Most registrations haven't come in yet I imagine.

You must check-in on site on Friday. There's simply not enough time in the morning to register, get air/paint, chrono, and get out on the field on-time.

We're going to come on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on if I can get enough time off (still hunting for a new job and I don't know if I'll have earned enough days off).

braddoc
01-02-2009, 04:03 PM
yup, he answered them.

we discussed it a lot yesterday and are aiming at arriving on Thursday. looks like it would be 3 or 4 of my friends, my brother and one or two of his friends, and I. (theoretically anyway. of course it will always be changing)

my brother was looking at Hotel rooms, rather than camping out. I imagine they probably fill up fairly early?

as far as registration is concerned. when you register do you register for the specific unit? as in the 716th? or is like- you register for the event and people organize their own units upon arrival?

I thought I remembered reading someplace that you have to register for the specific unit you are interested in. which seems more likely, but I didn't remember off the top of my head, and my browser wont load the webpage at the moment.. for whatever reason..

Mustangman
01-02-2009, 06:32 PM
yes, you would need to register for the 716th, and then we hhave three regiments to organize into once we have nuimbers the week of the event.

so how is this game played? do they open up the entire field and everyone roams around where ever they want doing missions and stuff or do they break the field into smaller fields with objectives that need to be met before moving to the next field? as far as paint and air refilling do you buy tickets and the turn them in at a fill station or is there one main staging area that it is all done at?

Mustangman

no, field is played as a whole, just like a battlefield would be. the objectives are on a timetable and that helps determine when and where were are needed. as far as missions are concerned, there really aren't a lot of "special missions" handed out, we just go where the game dictates that we are needed. that's how the 716th became the first unit to help defend all three beaches in the same game last year. we were also largely responsible for taking back Colleville from the allied AB last year. you will here that it was the special forces, but don't be fooled, if we hadn't gone over those walls 3 tmes before they did, they would have never made it.

as far as paint and air refilling do you buy tickets and the turn them in at a fill station or is there one main staging area that it is all done at?

as far as paint and air is concerned, paint is acquired by redeeming tickets, 4 per box. air is available at different areas on and off the field and is available whenever you need it.

Usually your squad is assigned to a certain location. I know i was put on Utah beach last year and that was a blast. As far as missions i was far too into shooting mass amounts of people at the time, and i had the misfortune of having to leave early.

A little thing im doing next time i go is waiting till the night before the scenario to get paint tickets. I bought paint then i had people coming up and offering me half price paint tickets cause they had to leave.

JJohnson
02-05-2009, 11:18 AM
do you all get a camping spot close to each other or is it first come first serve

From what I saw, it's pretty much first come, first serve. And your supposed to camp kinda with the unit you sign up to be in. Each unit has an assigned camping area, last year we wanted to camp by the woods though, so we camped between two other units.:p They were pretty close to our actually unit though.

Mustangman
02-08-2009, 06:55 PM
I will be there Mon either morning or afternoon not sure yet, either way, will do what I can to keep some camping space clear for everyone.

on another note, we still need bodies so if you have friends interested, now is the time to get them hooked. am also looking for someone who is interested in running a DT on the Beach. I will provide a case or 2 on top of what ever you are willing to provide. you would be responsible for the weapon and for returning it to me after the game.

would it be possible to start a list of people who are going and if they need a ride or have empty spots in their vehicles. it might be a little early for this to but just an idea.

Mustangman
02-09-2009, 09:10 AM
it's actually a great idea. what I recommend is solidifying your groups plans and see what each group has available or needs. we usually have a seat or two available and if there is a person who wants to leave early they can ride down with me.

Mustangman
02-10-2009, 11:25 AM
want to keep this fresh. also, a reminder, that if you wait too long, registration goes up the first week of May, from $70 to $100. paint is the JT Fluid series this year, all paint will be $65 this year, no "premium" available.also there are quite a few groups and individuals going from MN/WI this year, we should all try to coordinate to help keep the cost down for everyone. makes the game more affordable and enjoyable for everyone.

too many complaints and JT has a manufacturing facility for their paint in Neosho, which is just 30 minutes from the field.

Mustangman

I think I was the last one of our group shot out, it wasn't pleasant. but it wasn't difficult for them, the ref brought them into the game thru our position so they knew where we were before the game even got started. but yeah, they dropped some of them so close to my guys that some of us didn't even have a chance to shoot before they were overwhelmed. it was a great day though. wwe fought on every beach and helped take back Colleville at the end of the day.

all i know is last year when the allies hit utah the german front lines ended up scattering and we never really gained our composure, the first half an hour was kind of messy. Too bad we lost it right at the end.

Oh, and heres a tip of you have to leave early: Dont take the greyhound back, drive back yourself. It will save you a horrifying trip back. I would rather to a kamikaze charge right up allie lines than ride that bus back again.

Let me know how the Air is this year!

That is one of the main reasons why I am not going back to OK DDAY.

Two years in a row I have had very bad air refills. :character0051: 2006 and 2007.

Getting HP fills only to 2000-2200psi with 200+ targets in front of me drool:) is to frustrating for me. 5 minutes of air and 20-25 minute wait to get back in the game just to get air. I cant do that over and over again in one day.

I really hope they fixed it and can keep it going to the end of the game for both teams. Air for 4000 players is tough.

Looking forward to feedback from this upcaming game. :)

all of the air problems are supposed to be ironed out. according to what I have been told there will be more DZs with air, more fill stations and the potential to move those stations to field center as the game collpases.

The actual OK DDAY Scenario game is on Saturday June 13.

There are mainly other cool paintball events there all week but each is a separate game.

60-80% of the players show up on Thursday, check-in and shop on Friday, then play all of Saturday. The years I went there was another event on Sunday but 90% of the players including my group headed home Sunday morning. No energy after Saturday. We played until we dropped. ;)

Can you buy paint/paint tickets in the deadzones, or do you have to exit the field to do so?

I'm having trouble gauging/planning the paint budget our heavy weapon will be consuming and don't want to run out of paint, but at the same time be sitting on way too much paint surplus either.

well, last I heard, total registrations are just under or right at 2000, which 3 weeks before the game is bad news. I dunno, I have been more and more pleased with the games @ ST and the level of competition is just as high, without all of the whining and BS. I spoke to D about possibly hosting an Axis/Allies game @ ST next year, we'll have to see if I can get the details worked out with him, would be more of a scenario game vs the giant CTF that OK DDay is.

Have to agree here.

The only thing OK D-Day really has going for it (for us anyway) is the sheer size of the game being played and the chance to meet people from across the globe.

Aside from that, it plays out fairly similarly in principle to a massive Giant Big Game (certain things are open for points at certain times) with different special units.

There are a lot of things that could be done to make the game more interesting and challenging. for instance, there could be actual missions given out every hour as well as the objectives. this would require more strategy be employed. missions could be simple and with the space available there is ample opportunity for this kind of thing.
and I thought ok dday was really organized when it came to troop division and such, i guess not?

units are largely organized by the participants. this requires a lot more participation from commanders thru out the year. for the most part most of the organization and administration duties are handled by unit commanders.

Did we get the points for Sword in the end?

I want to say I'm sorry that we didn't fulfill our challenge goal set out from the beginning. In a way, I feel like we let you, the commanding officer, down. Perhaps if we had done better, we could have kept the whole "sword dispute" from happening.

That said, I am glad we were able to win, despite some things I have already spoken to you about.

I think I'll let Mustangman make the AAR for now.

I have thoughts on it, but as a unit general he likely got a bigger picture of what all transpired that day and would be better able to paint a real picture.

For example, from my perceptions of what I saw alone, I thought it would be a close game, with the Allies maybe even winning. Only after I left the field at 4:35 or so (eliminated after last insertion, oh well), arriving in the staging area around quarter to or so, did I learn that it was that big of a point margin. Could have fooled me, easily.

I do not yet know if I will be returning or not. There are several variables that await resolution first.

Two things I'll bring up in the AAR are the air fills and paint.

I never had an overly backed up airfill line, and I really did get 4500 the first fill.

I got ~4200 on subsequent fills throughout the day.

In that sense, the D-Day staff got something significantly improved. :)

On to the paint... well, that wasn't so good. JT Hydro paint apparently has been used with success at other events. Not so much with D-Day weather: the heat and humidity made short work of this field paint, turning it into a major fiasco.

Hopefully, JT learns and cooks up a new mix for next year, as they have a multi-year contract.

As far as the gameplay/flow/staffing itself went, I leave it to Mustangman.

2009 AAR- in brief

for those of you intersted in the events of this year. we had a great turn out of upper midwest players(MN, IA, WI) Akkadian, Sentinels, Working Class Heroes, and a large number of unaffiliated players. weather was decent for a change, rained a little bit but was clear and hot for game day. the game itself was a good old fashioned butt stomping. Germans destroyed the allies for the second year in a row. 2750-1750. on top of that the allies left the field early. I won't bore you with all the details of the game, any one who has specific questions just ask. I'll answer them to the best of my knowledge. will begin active recruiting for next year soon, so if you are interested, LMK or anyone else who went will be more than happy to answer your questions.

Hey, I am entered in this year's D-Day video contest and one of the criteria they are using to determine the Grand Prize winner is the number of video views. My entry is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFDZ9E36_HY

If you have 6 minutes to check it out, I would appreciate it. It shows many of the various aspects of the D-Day experience (the night game, some of the paintball tanks, the actual boat beach landings and the opening explosions).

Check it out when you can, each view increases my odds of winning the grand prize. Thanks!
