The current rules at splat tag and most other fields says that if you get hit on the gun you are out. I'm fine with this because in real life if a marine's gun takes a hit, it is useless and he it pretty much screwed, unless he has a sidearm. With that backup weapon he is still good to go. So I think the current paintballs rules should be modified to mimic this. If you take a gun hit the gun is out. If it is your only gun then you are done just like it is now. But if you have a backup weapon like a pistol or small pump gun or even the now famous knives you are still in the game but cannot use the weapon that took a hit. Maybe this is a dumb idea but its something I thought about today. What do you guys think?

it would be fun but not many players have backup guns but maybe for a small scenario it would be sweet.

It is great in theory, I will agree with you there. However this comes with the assumption that all will play by the rules and pay attention when their marker is hit and drop it on the spot. It becomes a enforcement nightmare for big games. (Not to mention no one wanting to leave markers around  or at least carry them not being able to use them) . police:)
Not a bad idea if you all are carrying sidearms. Another option is marker hits dont count but thats not what your point is.
Barrel tags usually count so I wouldnt mind these rules dribble:)

Well, the rules also state (at most fields) that if your tank gets shot, you're out. If your pods get hit, you're out. If your Camelbak gets hit, you're out. Basically, anything you carry means you're out. That would then include the gun. It helps end arguments of:
"REF! Check that guy! I shot him!"
"I'm not out, it only hit my gun!"
"Bull****, you are TOO out!"
yadda yadda yadda. A hit is a hit. Take the hit and reinsert. I've called myself out many O' time when it didn't break, but the paintball hit me hard enough. I figure if that were a bullet, it wasn't a glancing shot. I'd be dead.

I did this at the Hunt (yesterday) when i did a run by barrel tag. I got shot from 10ft away it didn't breack but I called my self out any way seeing that it hit me square in the chest.

Carlito,
Your idea is great in theory, but near impossible to accomplish in practice.
I think Splat Tag's rules as they stand are far easier to enforce and is the best way to minimize ugly situations.

think of it this way. if a your gun gets hit in real life, the gun would blow up in your face, probably killing you or blinding you.

again this was just an idea I had, just something to think about. I'm not saying the player would have to drop his gun, just not use it. Yes it would be hard to enforce but I think everyone on this site agrees with me when I say if you can't follow the rules on your own I don't want to play with you. And I know most people don't have pistols right now, but it could be a good reason to go and get a new tac-8.
In scenario games or I guess any game we can play a gun hit differently and have.
The main reason I set the Splat Tag rules to count gun hits is to not waste players paint. Also the main reason Gillie rule is any hit.
To me the fairest way to play is ANY hit with a break on anything a player carries is the way to go. Now if we made it field paint only I may change my mind :)
95% of my hits are goggles or my gun. I could make a player waste all of their paint :) if I could use my gun as a shield or just stick out my gun.

As an electro 'cocker owner, I would like a rule where anybody who shoots the gun's pneumatics has to go home for the day.
Okay, not really, but I really hate cleaning all that up and it happens at least once a game day.
Special Forces Paintball in Buffalo MN---Anything on the body counts..gun hits dont.."the objective in paintball is to not be tagged by a paintball...not your gun" Gun hits dont count at SFP--so if anyone like the gnu hits dont count rule---i suggest you play at SFP..."NUFF SAID"
Anything on the body, or what you wear or are carrying. Not honoring a gun hit as a hit is like running with a shield and having that hit and saying it doesn't count.
Keeps things simple, as in some cases, thats all you can site on.
Even if gun hits don't count at some fields, I still count them myself. So if I get a gun hit, I call myself out.

yeah, to tell you the truth, i'm pretty torn on the issue. from a ref's standpoint, having gun hits count is great. it really makes things a lot less complicated. just having the paint break on you or anything you have in your hands is enough.
but then again when i'm playing i do like the idea that i'm not out when i see a break on my gun. even when there are gun hits counting i sometimes find myself playing on, (unaware that one broke on my hopper/ or anything else.) then of course i tend to feel pretty bad because i played on when i was out. i feel like a cheater even though it was a complete accident. even though it i hate people who yell **** like "you're out/ i hit your hopper/ pods/ whatever" it does seem to help sometimes. because it is nearly impossible to feel a pod hit or a gun/hopper hit sometimes.:)
As you might remember Carlito, we played alot of no gun, hands or feet kills on our field years ago. I did this to make better shooters out of us all. It was to train ourselves to play the player then take the shot to get our kill. We did not use refs in our games and with the smaller player amounts and time to spare in each round of play we could do this. In the Games we play now we find ourselves surrounded by shooters not giving us the time to hunt them down and take that clean shot to the body. Pump players know what I mean, when they're playing in a game with semi's and full auto's. Now, we shoot to hit anything, get the man eliminated and quickly take his spot for quicker advancement and hopefully a quicker end to the 1 or 2 hour game. If a ref were to have to check each player as to whether the Gun was hit or the players hand, every time someone asked for a paintcheck the delay in playing on would be unruly to most. So in Games of today a hits a hit anywhere to keep it simple and moving right along.;)/AKA

IMO "Gun hits don't count" games only work with small groups who want the "my gun went down" experience and 1st timer private groups.
For everyone else it just promotes blind shooting, and lack of movement.

I agree with foster.
also I don't like playing with people who play at special forces. it causes confusion with newer players. lets keep it simple, every other field I've played at gun shots counted.

QFT brother!!!
Carlito - I am all for gun hits eliminating guns not players -
Ma$e - I love that SFP has that rule it's the only field that I know of that does it. They let you keep using your gun if it's hit however.
A gun is not necessary, it just makes it easier ;)

I agree, in splattag's case they should just have it for the end of the month big games.

if your really want to go real then limb shots shouldnt count either, i think most of us knows of a couple of Bad @$^# that would only get angry and even stronger if they took limb shot in real life.
it would all work if you were playing with more experenced players tha would know how to adjust to the new rule on gun hits only make your gun out and not the player and say 2 shots in a limb would eliminate that player

I disagree.
Firstly, making any hit count simplifies the entire game. Paintball is a game for fun, not war.
But just to humor you -- if anyone was hit with a .68 caliber bullet (granted, that cartridge doesn't exist in the firearm world, but that's what we're shooting in paintball) in a limb, they'd be dead of blood loss soon after.
So, in effect, you'ld be "dead" anyways. Either way, one hit = one elimination in paintball.
