Hi, everybody...this is my first post on this forum.

Let me start off by saying that I'm not really a newbie when it comes to paintball, just a newbie to scenario paintball. I've never played a big tactical game, or anything else longer than a single round. I see threads on practically every forum out there giving advice to players new to the sport of paintball, but there's not much out there giving people tips on what to expect for big events. Hopefully, I can get some answers here. I'll start with a couple questions off the top of my head, and ask more as they come to me.

1) Is it worth it to drive as far as the next state over to participate in a "Big Game"? Are they really that big a deal?

2) What does going to a long (8+ hours) scenario entail? What kind of stuff should you bring? What kind of stuff do most host-fields provide?

3) How much does it usually cost to attend these big events? Are there prizes or anything?

4) Are there any good fields around west/central Minnesota? It looks like most fields are around the Cities, and most of those focus on airball/speedball. I've seen a few fields further up to the north/northwest that have more of a scenario atmosphere, but that's too far for me to drive two or three times a month.

I guess that's it for now, but I'm sure I'll come up with more soon. Any info would be appreciated.

Hey WhiteWail,

Welcome to the forums. When you say you will have to drive a long distance, where are you coming from?

To answer your question about scenario paintball vs. any other type of paintball, it's typically this. Scenario paintball usually reinacts a historical event, or models the storyline after something recognizable, like a movie, TV show, or fabled story from history. Many times it's military-themed, but not always so. (Examples can be D-Day, Battle of Serenity Valley, Red Dawn, Black Hawk Down, Starship Troopers, Independence Day, Tour of Duty, Lord of the Rings, etc.)

Scenario paintball involves recreating an event, and along with the big theme of attacking another side, there are usually minor sub missions to attempt to complete for points, adding to the total outcome. There will almost always be opposing generals who deliver orders and missions to the others on his/her side, and there can be all sorts of sub-characters like medics, engineers, bomb techs, tank drivers, terminators, spies, etc., all adding a twist to the game.

Any other type of paintball is pretty much capture the flag, regardless if it's played in the woods or at a speedball course.

It's usually worth driving to a distance event because you not only get out of your own comfort level of knowing your field, but you also get a broader sense of how big and how great other paintball players can be. I figured that out on my first drive down to Oklahoma D-Day in '05. You always learn something new about your style of play, the tactics of others, and how to adapt to a new field you're unfamiliar with when the game starts.

For a long game, (8 hours plus), bring lots of water and snacks, in addition to your paintball gear. Many fields also allow you to camp the night before, so be prepared to bring the usual: tent, bag, pillow, change of clothes, etc.

These large games are pretty well known for their prize give-away at the end of the day, and more often than not, brand new markers are in the mix of prizes. It's how I got mine! beret:)

I haven't really explored what's out there in the greater Minnesota region, but Darrin created a wonderful site to display every field in MN he could get his hands on. That site is www.mnpig.com if you're interested. It will show every field and tell you if it has a Website or not. Also, teams were allowed to fall in and display their sites as well, so if there is a team near you, it's worth it to join one.

Does that help out?

Yeah, that helps. I live in Hutchinson, MN, and there WAS a paintball field that just opened not too long ago about 10 minutes away, but I think the owner changed his mind about running the field. So that means no matter which direction I go, I'm looking at about an hour's worth of driving. On top of that, I don't think any of the fields around the Twin Cities offer large scenario games, so if I want to attend one of those I'm looking at closer to 2-3 hours of driving, and that's just one-way. So you can see why I'm asking a lot of questions before I just pack a lunch and ride out!

Anyways, if anyone can recommend some good fields around my area, or let me know when the next big event around Minnesota is, that would be really cool. Hopefully it's not too soon since I'm still upgrading my marker, but it's still snowing outside so I think I've got some time. But that reminds me...are there any outdoor fields that stay open year round? I know it's kind of pricey to operate a field in the freezing cold, but I was just curious.

Special Forces offers large games, and Splat Tag offers the most amount of games I've ever seen out of one field. He's even letting me do my own game there, the Battle of Serenity Valley game on July 20th. Hope to see you at a lot of these in the coming months. beret:)

Hello TheWhiteWail, and Welcome to the MSPG Forum. I'm glad to see you found your way here. All of your questions are exactly what this Web-Site and Forum was set up for. Although the Webs Home Page is still under construction which will have Feild locations and links, Teams that are from around the State incl. Wisc. Games that will be played and where through out the State. But for now the Forum will be acting as its info page. So if you watch the calender you should see almost every Game going on and where for any given Month.
Now as far as is it worth the drive to take part in a large scale Scenario/Woodsball Paintball Game, Well I for one think it is, my Club has been doing it for the past three years driving to Splat-Tag over by Hudson Wisc. 2-3 times a month all year. And we have never regreted the time and money spent to make these trips. We are from Monticello which is a little north of Hutch. so I know what your saying. Like Badger said Special-Forces Paintball which is located a little East of Buffalo Mn. and is a nice close field for you and does offer Biggame events. So instead of me going through every Question of yours in this one post, let me just say; You have come to the right place to find or find out any and everything that is happening in Scenario/Woodsball in the State. So visit often, post your questions, follow the links when members or fields post them, and soon you will know if it would be the right thing to do for you. Also if your interested in attending the GGXIV at Splat-Tag which is June 7th I believe a Sat. you just let me know and your welcome to join us and I promise you, you'll agree it was worth it./AKA

OMG yes it is so worth the drive the only games i look forward to. they are all day the game never stops reinsertions tanks mass troop movments it like war but better. its intence but thats why you came to the sport right. plus they are useally big gathering like 400 to 800 to more in attendence. good way to make freinds that play. the rules very from game to game some units stay the same. specal units that you have the oppertunity to be in are awsome and fun. from special forces that can come into the game any where on the map they wish. to the near invincible terminators that rule the feilds. pluse you never been more scared that when a tank sneeks up behind you. good fun. also thats when you see paintball teams in full form and if you inpress them or are genarrly a good person they might ask you to join the team. hope to see you their sniper:) beret:)

Hi, everybody...this is my first post on this forum.
Welcome even though my friends have already said that. I am the unofficial welcome commitee and the forum commedian.

1) Is it worth it to drive as far as the next state over to participate in a "Big Game"? Are they really that big a deal?
yes the GBGs are the only offical big games I've been to and they were worth it.
2) What does going to a long (8+ hours) scenario entail? What kind of stuff should you bring? What kind of stuff do most host-fields provide? Food, water, and atleast a case of paint (unless you're a pump player)

3) How much does it usually cost to attend these big events? Are there prizes or anything? $30-$60 (around here) and yes there are usually prizes I got 3 cases from Splat tag and that covered me for the year.

(Examples can be ...Independence Day) its Strunbargur due to copyright stuff but thanks for acknowledging (sp) it.

what scenerio offers:

1. wider range of tactics. sneaking through grass, measured retreats, etc
2. more markers & tools. nerf lauchers, tanks, grenades, pumps, doubles, full autos, and sometimes knives
3. different missions, find something in the enemy territory with an undersized team of players, will usually mean to sneak through without being recognized or engaging any opponents, hold a base for a set time, find and eliminate a certain opponent, etc.

Some of the funnest times playing in scenarios are not the fire fights but the anticipation or avoiding the fights. Anybody can find the angles, shoot, etc using thier speedball skills. Not everyone is as good at not being seen. or recognizing people hiding in the woods. You know they are out there looking for you, but just exactly where...
good luck,
Stapes
