View Full Version : Artillery, Grenades, Mines

I'm pretty new to paintball (well playing seriously, I guess) but I do have 12 years in the military so I understand the tactical application of these devices. I'd like to know the PRACTICAL application of this equipment in paintball... is it that useful?

Anyone have thoughts or much experiences with this stuff?

And any ideas out there for close air support and tactical nukes?

I'll field this one...

Artillery
No, not really any practical use, but it's sure fun to watch our guy, Sparky, come up with devising an air cannon capable of tossing a Nerf rocket nearly 75 yards, or a flour bomb about the same distance. In woodsball, too many trees stop a round well before it should land. The only practical use would be on open ground, and perhaps on a hill raining down rockets, etc. onto rushing players.

Grenades
Grenades are cool, but only if everyone plays honestly by grenade rules. The rule is, if you get ANY spray on you, consider yourself eliminated. I've seen way too many people claim they never got sprayed and keep going. Some grenades don't spray on impact, but there are some out there that do a good job. I tend to stay away from using them, as I've been burned by them before (not going off when they should, or popping before impact ).

Mines
Mines can be VERY cool, but take a while to implement. I've never really witnessed anyone go through the trouble of setting a couple up, then digging holes to hide them around something valuable. I've done it at our home field in Morristown, but never had the time/patience to do it at a GBG or other big scenario game. Someone please surprise me with one, though, I'd love it.

Sparky also designed a WMD mine, capable of spraying everyone in a 20 foot radius, but he's had some technical problems with it and hasn't found the time to repair the problem. You can see this mine in my first book on page 64.

Aerial Assaults
Another member of our team, Padre, had developed a remote controlled plane capable of dropping two Nerf rockets down on people, one at a time, when he pushed a button on his controller. We have yet to put this into action. It [I]is cool to watch, though.

At our Morristown field, we can hire the local neighbor to fly over our field and drop items down on top of us from his ultralight-class biplane, but it's difficult to set that up all the time. We DO need to incorporate him more often, I'll admit.

Tactical Nukes
This has been broached by "buying" a nuke from the referees at GBGs, then "blowing up a strategic base," thus denying anyone the chance to hold that base for 20-30 minutes during a game. It's effective in eliminating a lot of enemy players for a while, and keeping a base away from the opposing general for points.

Does that help you out? beret:)

i think they'd be nice for holding bases and positions.... this is the one i'm looking at.

I have down in Morristown, what is known as a minefield in a can. It's eight paintball mines that fit into an ammo can. I've broken out four of them and had them in place around a flag to capture. Both Pippi and Mogwaii snuck through and never got sprayed. Grrrrr.... 300a:)

I could bring them up from Mo-town and use them at a GBG I suppose, but A) I'd hate to forget about them after the game and fail to retrieve them, and B) find out that they took out some of our own guys who didn't know they were there.

Yes!

Thanks Badger... I was kinda joking about the close air support and nukes, but imagination prevails!

Can you tell me more about flour bombs? That sounds like fun (reminds me of college!)

A flour bomb was basically that, a bomb made of flour. You take a party balloon, fill it full of flour, and tie it off. What Sparky would then do is put the flour balloon inside a makeshift canister, then launch it out of his air cannon. When the balloon would hit, the balloon would burst, sending a cloud of flour into the air. It would look like a small explosion of white smoke. However, here's hoping no one was lighting up a cigarette when the cloud expanded. Can you say WOOOOOSH!!!??

Here is a pic of Sparky's cannons. Darrin now owns the light green one.

You can see more of these at: http://www.mnmilitia.com/gallery/sparky

As for the air support, if you look at Darrin's banner at the top, the little picture of the biplane between the E and S in Minnesota, that's our guy, Falcon, flying his biplane.

i use granades they are a good distraction, smoke granades always help me on the feild always. mines work only if your teams demo squad know what they are doing and whare to put them. rocket launchers are great fun and very usefull on a team.
