View Full Version : Oklahoma DDAY my first time

I just got back from the 11 hour drive to play in the Oklahoma DDAY giant game.
First I'd like to say if you haven't gone yet then go soon!
Here's some comments, I'll add more when I have time!
well the games over, our side won by 300 points, among memories, Darrins Angel went down after 10 shots as the Commonwealth was storming from the boats @ Sword Beach, he ended up using a Mini, *later on
he was siting on a barrel in a fortified city *talking to a few guys, while resting his gun on his hip he fired a few shots & took out a crawler, *lol *most laziest shot I've ever seen but that's how good he is!
*Another time in that same city Brian was camped behind a tree & cement tube, a nonactive allied tank was going to roll pass but then decided to active 8 feet from Brian & unleashed a shower of balls & lit him up!
the thing that stands out is the damn Commenwealth unit of about 40 that represents England,Canada,Australia & othe UK themed players, all wearing Maroon & yellow tshirts, most wearing British camo pants & some even wearing kilts! These guys & Airborne are what we were fighting most of the day.
Everytime you saw one of those maroon shirts you knew the **** was going to hit the fan since they mostly roll with 50-100+ guys!
They were awesome crawlers, alot of times they would run full speed under fire to a closer point then dive flat to the ground with hundreds of balls laying into them, the brush & long grass covered them just enough to get a few kills, they would keep coming like this non stop added with a barrage of long balling, most would get bored shoting grass where they thought they were but they would lay still
or crawl to a different location, whatever the case my fellow Germans would quickly turn their attention to long balling & visual targets which allowed the crawlers to make a impact!
There was so many players that if when big amounts of players 100+ got eliminated from a area 100+ more were reinserting so battles sometimes last 2+ hours, insane!

I went two years ago and had a blast! I was glad I was using a pump though, there were huge lines for getting air and paint. But there was endless targets the whole game. Its easy not to miss! :)
How was the situation this year? Has it improved over previous years?

no problems with air, main air had 4 4500 fill stations & 4 3000, line was never more than 3 at each, pretty fast fill, 4500 every time.
Paint was Marbalizer @ $75 case & Premium @ $65 case, we didn't pre-Reg do entry was $100 each, so to all them whining people who come to Splat Tag & complain that entry & paints expensive I laugh at !
You buy paint & get Paint tickets, that line was fast, then you go to a different location to get paint off the back of a semi, that line was also less than 10 deep & fast.
The Chrono was 2 lines with hundreds of people but it only took 20 minutes since they had about 20 refs chronoing on the speedball course, not bad!
The staff was everywhere, medics everywhere, quick lines at showers, toilets were emptied couple times a day, camping was only $5 a person.
I used bug spray, so I didn't find any ticks on me, poison ivy wasn't a factor since I didn't crawl much, Fields are massive with lots of different terrain.
Sometimes it got confusing where reinsertion points were when battles moved along to new areas, at some points we just reinserted ourselfs, insertions were every 20 minutes (9:20,9:40,10,10:20,10:40,11 etc...)
Sword Beach was where we started & it's been totally redesigned with 2 flag bases up the hill that the allies must take before Tanks can come into play!

First, let me congratulate you on winning (for the third time in a row). As part of the Commonwealth (the force in the maroon shirts) who got to fight you on Sword Beach, I can say that it was blast shooting against you this year. I've run with the Commonwealth for all of my three D-Day experiences and they are hardcore and a very exciting unit to be a part of.
I ended up securing Sword Beach Flag one in the first nine minutes of the game but you guys put up a hell of fight in Caen and fought wave after wave of our attacks off (which earned you 150 of the 300 points you won by, which if you do the math, means you gave the Germans the win).
Glad you made it down this year. Kudos again on the win, see you at Splat Tag.

Good work 716th.
I am sorry I could not be there for the win. Sounds like you guys kept with the reputation of the unit once again, and the entire German army is grateful for your effort.
Again, nice work.

It was cool to see the different units & country themes, I especially had interest towards the Commonwealth unit because I was born in Australia & most of my family is Australian or Kiwi, but I ended playing with the Germans & had fun, who knows maybe next year Ill try the other side (if I feel like getting a million welts coming out of those boats Lol)

That storm is hitting D-Day field right now:
(Severe weather radar map removed).
You can see the #14 in the upper right-hand corner of OK, that's the field.
EDIT: 6/16/10. Talked to one of the D-Day organizers today, they got five and half inches of rain on Monday night.

Our Aussies are great! We only had seven this year and three from New Zealand, but next year's numbers look to be back around a dozen or so with 8 NZ'ers. One of our Commanders served in the Australian armed forces (special forces, I don't know what branch but his beret is green). I never get tired of the accents, it makes the week so much fun. Nothing like someone screaming "Get your bloody ***** up the soddin' hill" to get you moving. Come join us next year, it's a riot.

I know I'm getting to this conversation a bit late, but that was a heck of a fight this year. The 6th was everywhere in the south this year...I didn't make it north of Peagus Bridge until after 4:00. As always, the CW put up one heck of a fight this year. Didn't get down to Sword, but was in and around Caen all day. With the exception of the awful Caen DZ, I had a blast this year.
Didn't know that Darrin and Firefly made it down this year. Would have been nice to say high to you guys...I did see a Wild Bunch Jersey in the middle of the afternoon, but I couldn't tell who it was.

yeah we were at Sword to start but were in Caen untill it was lost to the Allies,
Pretty sure Darrin was the only Wild Bunch jersey wearing player.
Our trip was planned basically on Weds so there wasn't much time to get the word out we were going, I'm pushing to go next year so we'll post in advance future plans

It was a treat to see some familiar faces down there. Damn glad you guys made it down.
First time for you guys? If so, let's hear some stories from the line!
I was Command Sergeant Major of the 716th at Sword, and Caen. I ran out of paint at one point, so I stood in the crossroads between the buildings with paint bouncing past me and just started waiving "the bird" at them. lol Everyone behind me got a chuckle, which was the point. Keep the moral high.....which was hard to do after the morning hours.
As far as points, thanks to the Allies in the morning for cheating. That got points reversed for the first hour. It's a shame it had to be that way, I can't stand cheaters anywhere I play. Don't get me wrong, I know for a fact there was cheating on both sides, all over the field. But I wasn't all over the field, I was at Sword. I wasted a lot of paint on people that wouldn't call themselves out.
Team Akkadian will not be attending next year. The game this year took me to a place that I don't want to be as a paintballer. Hopefully the staff will get some issues worked out down there, and we may return in the future, but not 2011, or 2012 for sure.
Thanks Mustangman and the Working Class Heroes. You guys were a class act, as always. Midwest Mercenaries were a great group to run with. And I saw Darrin and the boys bouncing all over that field! Way to stay in it guys.
Till next time..........

For those of you that have gone multiple years, and were at D-Day this year:
How would you rate the game? Pretty much the same as past years? Better/worse?
I've been thinking of trying it again in 2011 if I have the money (the principle reason I did not return this year), and since a lot of the 716th I know won't be back, I'm thinking of trying it "from a different perspective." Still German, but perhaps a different unit.

The improvements to Caen were great this past year and I heard that the new Breacourt Manor was very impressive. I would tend to agree with nchittendon, that they just needed more referees as no called hits were fairly prevalent on both sides. I was part of the Commonwealth, and I was continually impressed throughout the day with the self paint checks and paint check buddy requests and honest "hit" calls by our unit. That did not run true with some of the other units, I actually had to tell some players from other Allied units that they were hit.
This year was my third in a row and I thought this year was one of the best. The new Sword Beach invasion was great and the battle for Caen was epic. The Germans put up a great fight, holding off wave after wave of my maroon brothers in arms from the Commonwealth Expeditionary Force (CEF).
Overall, it's still an unmissable game, in my opinion. They are working on an official rule book for next year (to be carried by all referees), which will be a big step forward. Also, they are working a revised orientation video that addresses the problems from the past games (walking across live fire zones after being hit, shooting the tank drivers, reinsertion points, etc.).
The air, paint and water this year was amazing. Full CO2, 3500 and 4500 at eight different points on the field (and two back at camp). Every 4500 fill put me right to the line, 4500 every time, very impressive.
If you pre-register, you are looking at only $135 for the week. ($65 for registration, $65 for the case of paint and $5 for camping). I did go through two cases this but I played in the night game too.
So, it's worth it.:)

Yeah, I'm sure that's what he meant (3000 psi fills for 3k tanks)

I've been there 3 years, missed this one.
We shall see.

The Working Class Heroes and Team Akkadian will be pursuing challenges at other venues for the time being. after 5 yrs @ OK DDay, the WCH have decided to find some new venues to challenge us as a team.
OK DDay is an event that everyone should attempt to make at least once. I will not speak ill of the event, it has helped me and the rest of the WCH to become what we are. I have made many friends over the years there and wish those who remain good fortune, both blue and red.
for those who have never attended, I am always available to assist with any questions you may have. I will continue to help the German Army recruit and to continue to help support the leadership of the Axis Command.

Ha, yes, I meant 3000 PSI, whoops.
Part of the allure of the event too is the unit your choose. I found a home in the CEF like no place else in paintball. Each year, our leadership organizes a DFAC tent providing all of our meals throughout the week, supply runs to Wal-Mart, laundry runs to Joplin and even an automatic gun shoot. The week before D-Day, Oklahoma hosts the country's largest full-auto gun shoot and a few of the vendors stay around so that early in the week we can shoot some of our dream guns. We shoot down into a valley into vehicles loaded with explosives, it's a rush. I have now fired an Uzi, AK-47, and an AR-15. You want to fire from a seated belt-fed gun, .50 Cal, 10 gauge automatic shotgun, you name it, they can bring it. It was maniacal fun.
The other aspect is that we train throughout the week as unit, defensive procedures, bunker clearing, three-pronged advance, unit leapfrog and the like. There really is nothing like having a group of soldiers alongside you who will react in a way that you can fully anticipate. I know many of the units (German and Allied) practice this and that is what sets D-Day apart (that and over 3,000 combatants on nearly 800 acres300a:).
