i went and talked with the guys at military surplus and they sold me one kind of like the first picture you put up. i'm going to give it a try and go from there. thanks a lot i appreciate it!

The first red-dot that Darrin posted is almost identical to the one I use on my 68 Carbine. I've used barrel scopes/sights, but the single pane red-dot holographics are better because you won't get internal condensation and they're way easier to clean. The trick is to dial them in at about 75' and on a single pane red-dot that's pretty easy. Remember that if you change barrels you'll want to re-sight it.

If you need magnification you can always side-mount a telescopic on the side of your marker for spotting, but I wouldn't try to use one for shooting.

Oh, and don't use anything but a mirco fiber towel to clean the lens.

the one that i have been using is from cc military surplus and is kind of like the first one. but only costs $20. the one thing i don't like about it, is that i believe that the lens is tinted. which sometimes makes is harder to see through it when aiming at a player. are all of them like that?

Mine isn't tinted, but it does have some kinda scratch coating on it so it isn't totally clear either.

Don't use a magnification optic of any kind.

For the range you'll be able to hit a player with a paintball, magnification won't be any assistance.

It is handy for spotting though.

I carry a cheap set of binoculars with me for spotting. The only thing to look for when shopping for them is how they work with your mask. I think the set I'm carrying now were $20 at Wal-mart and work great with the mask.

I had red-dots once upon a time, but after a paintball went through it and I ate some of the glass, I decided it wasn't quite what I wanted in front of my face.
