View Full Version : Automag question
Looks like i'm probably buying a silver Automag, but before i do i wanted to get your guy's opinion on the gun, like if it shoots well, if its reliable, you know, things like that. and also if you think it'll work well with a Ricochet Apache hopper(already have one just want to know if it'll work well with the automag) heres some pics of the gun

Maybe the classic valve mags are like that, but my X valve Mag works good until it gets cold out... like 20* or lower.
Can't go wrong with a Mag... great guns.

One of the Sentinels shoots a ULE mag he loves it.
If I didn't have so much gear, I'd consider an older automag (classic, RT pro, minimag, etc). I still want one, just can't justify it yet.

I've had my Tac-one for two years now. the only problem I ever have had was paint related, nothing to do with the function of the marker at all(paint swells with the relative humidity, I forgot to compensate.DOH) anyway, I have converted 4 of my teammates and we all love them. can't be beat for consistency. completely reliable. IMO, even one of if not the easiest marker to work on. needs few upgrades( ULT, LVL10 and Xvalve are the main things to consider.) the older bodies require twistlock barrels, but you can find ULE bodies(AC threaded) for pretty reasonable, usually from $50 -$100 for used. either way, 'Mags are awesome, capable of holding their own with even the newer markers on the market. I am saving up for this-

I don't see a trigger guard on this critter. Am I missing something or don't they have a trigger guard. Don't markers have to have trigger guards on them to be used for play, safety issue????

Depends on the insurance the field has and such.
It's not necessarily a universal rule.

As Mustangman said, they are pretty bullet proof. Put a drop of oil in it before each day starts and it'll run almost forever. Consistant and quiet. I've only got 3 automags with classic valves and a PumpMag. Don't need anything else.

it's so purty and it kinda matches the orange on my car. besides that is one sick gat that will rock the field and beat up on most of the markers out there . there's a reason that Emags and Xmags were banned from tourney play for a long time.... nobody else could keep up with them. heck, you don't even have to get an EMag, I have a buddy from OK who shoots a ULE bodied mag with an Xvalve and across the chrono he was knockin' down 26-28 bps. Not tooo bad for a mech. of course he had it tuned to perfection at a tank output of around 1200 psi.:D

But dude... it's a rasta... fear:)
you can make 'em purr with good regs and enough input. I have two of the old AA Armageddon valves stashed... fully adjustable from 0 to 1200 psi. On the 114 tank I have, mag efficiency isn't a problem.

Got my first automag for Christmas 1992. The gun never did well with CO2 when it was cold. When the compressed air systems came out right around 93-94 the battle between the midwest (automags) and the west (Autocockers) began.
The reason the gun does not have a trigger guard is the original owner wanted a double trigger and the frames were not made for them, so they just chopped it off. There was a race to get the guns to shoot faster.
The mags and cockers started losing their appeal in the tourney circuit once the Shocker (shoebox) and Angel came around. The age of elctros came about in 95-96. At the 96 World Cup in Orlando Brass Eagle (yup the guys behind the old Stingray) unveiled the Angel. After that unveiling there was a falling out between BE and WDP ( the English maker). WDP decided to sell the marker themselves. The rest is history. All the other guns sort followed.
I now own a Minimag and Classic RF (which will be converted to a ULE). Splat Tag is having Woodball Tourneys that don't allow electros. The battle between the West ad the Midwest will happen again if the tourney gets popular. I will be shooting an Autoccocker on May 24, I know that one of my teamates will be shooting a mag.
Another bit of history, Bill Hansen (sp?) the former owner of Splatball was one of the guys who beta the mag when they were in the prototype stage.
So the Automag and Minnesota have a history together.

don't wanna part with one of those regs do you?:D anyway, I'm kinda partial to orange. have had an orange phantom and Mini and am thinking about getting my Tac done in a cool orange acid wash or something along those lines.

Matt, that forum you linked to is just horribly tempting for me to spend money I don't have (went and started looking at the other FS threads).
One of these days I may actually sell some of the collection to allow for an automag...

Sorry brother, but those will be with me a long, long time. I lucked into them from two different owners, and bought them pretty reasonably. I even know a couple of places that can still get parts and rebuild them.
What I really need is a way to make my qloader bulletproof so I can use it again with the Mag.

I don't really know what's reasonable for AA Armageddon regs (haven't seen one before), but I found a tank with one over on SO:

That's about what I paid for my 114/4500 tank with the Armageddon on it... good price with a fresh hydro on the tank...

What's the issue with the Qloader? might be able to help you out, we have three guys on our team running with the Q now.

The trigger guard was cut to allow putting a double finger trigger on it. Some fields won't allow you to use it without a trigger guard, so you may want to specifically ask Darrin, Hawk.
I love Mags personally. I picked up a Micro RT not long ago, and it works great. Owned 4 mags prior to that, and picking up a E-Mag here shortly, and they all worked great as well. Mags can be a lot of fun, and don't require much maintainance. Just a couple drops oil in the ASA before you screw in your tank, and you should be set.
Just a couple things you want to remember,
Don't use Co2 with X-valves, RT valves, ReTro valves, or E-mag valves. The classic you have, should work just fine with Co2. And some level 10 bolts don't like Co2 either, though some don't have a problem.
CO2 wont be an issue. i'm using compressed air.
