The only part of an Apex barrel that provides backspin is the tip.
The Apex can be turned off. The Flatline is always there, but if you don't want the Apex tip to provide backspin, you just reach up and switch it off.
Apex tips can be added to lots of barrels, with the use of the "electrical tape mod" or adapters (http://www.jjperformance.com/apex.html) you can buy.
Lots of people loooove Lapco barrels, and they sell several (http://www.lapcopaintball.com/store/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=apex+ready) that you can easily stick an Apex on, without an adapter.
I have one, but haven't tried it out yet.

nooooOOOOO, doooooNNNNT do it. Sorry, i find apex/flatline barrels completely unnecessary, not worth the wasted paint and ultra slow fps. The only thing that I find is good about said range enhancing devices is that they hold down a bunker very very well, nobody is sticking their head up.

You are better off getting a barrel kit so you can size the barrel to your paint size.

Personally after using a Flatline system for the 98, I would say ditch it and use anything else if you are looking for accuracy. I thought the prospect of being able to shoot further than the other guy would give me an advantage in the game but I was proven horribly wrong. I tried everything I could to get the accuracy to better its self yet still failed miserably. IMO the 98 Flatline system is no good. I'd say go spend the $$ on a barrel that will give you better accuracy.
Just my 2cents worth take it as you will

Good barrels?
for the price, a CP one piece classic is amazing, along with a one piece stiffi and a lucky 15. Otherwise, for full barrel kits, peppersticks, freak kits, CP kits are all really good. The best barrel on the market, bar none, is a deadly wind whisper kit with freak inserts. Amazingly light and accurate, its a really unkown barrel but any one who uses is says its amazing.

All very true, but if you do really want to get a flatline or an Apex, I'd suggest an Apex for several reasons.
1. You can take the Apex tip off of the barrel if you want
2. You can do other cool things with the apex (making the shot drop over or around a bunker)
3. The Apex can be modded onto lots of barrels

Honestly every apex iv seen used by the time you get it adjusted right to shoot the person around the tree. The person is usally gone

Yeah, that's also true, but it's still cool that it can do that. I have a friend who used to use one on his 98, and at Combat's Omaha beach he got it set pretty well to drop into some of the bunkers up on the hill.

Yeah me too, I was just saying if he wanted a barrel that could do what a flatline does + more, he should get an Apex.
I use a Deadly Wind barrel w/a Freak kit, it's an amazing barrel:D

ok, call me a nub if you want, but a few questions:
1. How much does the Deadly Wind barrel w/a Freak kit cost?
2. does that setup work with a 98 custom?
3. How do i know which freak kit to get?

Deadly Wind doesn't make 98 threaded barrels, so you would have to get an A5, AC, Spyder, ect threaded barrel and then also buy a A5 to 98 adaptor, or AC to 98, or Spyder to 98, ect.
Brand new a Deadly Wind is about $90, A Freak kit is anywhere from $50-$100brand new (depending on how many inserts and aluminum vs stainless steel)
The size of the Freak kit depends, but I'd recommend the 8 insert kit. They cost like $70 for a brand new aluminum kit, or $100 for a stainless steel kit.
So overall, yes it is an expensive set up, but IMO it's worth it. If you want to go cheaper and still get a nice barrel, go with a one piece CP.

You can get deadly wind barrels cheaper. $90 for the barrel, $50 for a full aluminum (recommended by me) kit. Otherwise, to be honest, you will be fine with like 3 freak inserts for around $25 or so.
The hammerhead barrels are good, no doubt, but highly over-priced and over-hyped. The reverse porting they use doesnt do really anything and neither does the rifling. Last i looked they were very expensive so unless they have drastically come down in price there are much better barrels with a cheaper price tag.

I would recommend getting a cocker thread barrel, it is the most common threading so if you ever upgrade you will have a good chance that it will fit the new gun, or if you ever sell it it will sell faster. just my opinion.
