I was reading in the new APG (may issue) that they are going to do a test on the weight of paintballs. The article was on how heavy balls hit a lot harder then lighter balls (kinda a no brainer but ya just dont think about it) they were saying that a heavy ball shooting at 300fps could hit as hard as a lighter ball shooting at 320fps, this said heavy balls could be pushing the safety threshold and start causing bodily harm and deter new players from coming back to play.
what APG was asking is that people use a digital scale and weigh up 10 or so paintball out of their cases of paint, average them out and send their findings into APG. I will look up the email and post it up here when I get it, I'll also post the page # if anyone wants to read it. if anyone would like to help me on this let me know. they ask that you write down the paint brand, shell color, fill color and a packaging date if you can get it. I will be doing:
Beast - Paintball nation USA- yellow fill- clear/blue shell
inferno - Xball-pink fill-purple/orange shell
frostbite - DXS - green fill - green shell
tear - Karnage - yellow fill - orange/yellow shell

PM me the info from APG.
I'm willing to help out, but I need to figure out what paint I can get my hands on before I post which ones I'll be weighing.

will do.
also if multiple people want to do the same brand of paint that will be good to, it will help with how consistent a brand may be.

I have one candidate for the list: I'll test some Nelson Hot Spot because I know a lot of people report that they feel it hits harder.
Perhaps there's something to it, perhaps it's another factor, or maybe they're heavier.

APG pg 64-66
APG@fidmail.com
does everyone want to send them in on their own or all at once?
Beast = 3.223
frostbite = 2.964
inferno = 3.151
tear = (yello/orange) 2.854
tear = (green/silver) 2.845
anarchy = 2.634
I am having a hard time with this test. It is not taken into account the thickness of the shell and the brittleness of the shell.
I would say weight would give it more fallow-through :) But the shell is the most important thing.
This weight thing has been know forever. Thats why paintball is played with 68 cal. Companies have tried 60 and 50 cal but there is not enough weight. Same type of thing with airsoft.
Weight is need to distance! Yes there is a balance needed but lighter paintballs will show down faster. This has been taken into account by paintball designer and manufactures since day one.
Keep us updated.

I gotta agree with E on this. Back when ProBall was still made, it was the heaviest on the market and a thick shell. It give you distance and a straighter shot (depending on barrel of course) and I don't think the hit was any worse than winter paint. With a thicker shell the energy, when it hits you, stays compact and hurts more than a break. I'm sure many of you have experienced this. I guess I'll have to read the article...can't believe they're giving weight as the culprit for turning folks away from paintball.

I'm all for investigating weight, however I'm not sure what the outcome will be.
My personal intuition is that paintballs don't vary enough to make a noticeable difference, but maybe they do?

To me, it's just another experiment to see if it matters.

The difference between 2.8 grams and 3.2 grams traveling at300 fps is huge. I know it doesn't sound like a lot but the same goes for boxing gloves, ask a boxer if he would rather get hit with an 18 oz glove or a 17 oz glove or even a pool cue, I won't touch a 19.5 oz stick unless I am breaking with it and I use a 19 oz stick. You add 1 ounce or even a half ounce and the difference changes everything. I know grams are different than ounces but something to think about. I am just rambling I'll shut up now.

I think it is something to look into, I mean, why not?
I don't however believe weight of paint, thickness of shell, or ROF have anything to do with why new players don't stick around. If pain is really someones excuse than I can promise that when pressed for an answer those same players are going to find many other reasons why they didn't like their experiance. Paintball is expensive, that is why people don't come back.
I would say, based on what I have seen from the 50,000+ players that come through my field, that less then .5% think that it hurt to much and did not want to do it again. And out of the very small % most were ladies and kids.
Cost is the number one factor for people playing paintball.
And you want to know how to prove that, just ask one question.
Would you play more if everything was free?

No joke! I spent $175 at AA last weekend and that didn't even include gas up there or Famous Daves on the way back. I am so ready for ST to open up for the season.

ouch sorry. six times? owww. and that doesnt count either because with any sport, or even standing up the wrong way, can injure that place hahaha
Just wear more layers ;) or become fat like me.

I can dig it EZD! Nothing like a nice plump layer to protect the bones. Still, the welt goes in the same layer as the fat. I've not been hurt by a paintball myself, and I'm an older fart!!!! Sometimes those paintballs can sting a might, but it goes away in a short time.

Ya know, I think that if they are really going to adjust the weight of the ball or any of that junk, they should put the specs (reccomended PFS and Thermal limmitations) right on the side of the box. My 2 cents
